THE CENTURY HOUSE INTERVIEWS - CAROL ZORN

Carol Zorn interview by Kenny Caperton (December 2009)
Carol Zorn is the owner of the business "Zorn Design," which was located in the upstairs bedrooms on the left side of The Century House from 2003 - 2008. Zorn also contributed to the creation of The Myers House NC - without the help of Carol and her 2 sons, the North Carolina house would not exist! I sent her list after list of interior and exterior measurements that I needed from the original house in order to create the building plans for NC house, because no blueprints are on record for the original 1888 South Pasadena house.

This interview gives you a small inside look of what it's like to be inside the original Spookhouse on a daily basis.

How long did you run your design business from "The Century House" (what years) and what rooms did your business occupy inside of the house?

5 years (2003-2008).

When and how did you first find out that your office was located inside the infamous Myers House, one of the most iconic Horror movie houses of all time?

The first Halloween I was there.

When you were working inside the 120 year old house day and night, did anything strange or scary ever happen to you or did you ever notice anything out of the ordinary while inside the house?

No.

How often did you encounter HALLOWEEN fans and what was the strangest encounter you had with a fan? …other than that one psycho fan from North Carolina that asked you to measure the entire house so that he could build a life-sized replica of it ;)

Every Halloween of course and a few times a year. Most of the fans were polite and just curious. I would often let them come inside and into my office and that made their trip to the west coast complete. Most of the fans were form the mid-west.

Oh, I just remembered a story…
One Halloween, a "Halloween" tour was planned and my landlord neglected to tell me. I came to the office early in the morning, unlocked the front door and walked up the stairs and Michael Myers was lurking at the top in a mask and yielding a bloody dagger. I just about had a heart attack. It was all a part of the reenactment that was to happen that morning. It would have been nice if I would have known before.

Over the years did you hear any interesting stories about the house or ever find out any general history about the house?

I had heard it was a boarding house at one time and the bathroom was out in the back.

Have you ever seen John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN? If so, when did you first see it and what was your reaction to the film?

I did not see the film until 2007. I finally realized why the house was so iconic to Halloween fans. I have to admit, the first time I came down those steep stairs in the dark after seeing the movie, I got the chills.

What is your favorite feature about The Century House and what will you miss most about working in it?

The location and the simple and elegant architecture (the double hung windows, beautiful moldings and high ceilings).

And lastly, after looking at photos of the completed The Myers House NC house, what is your reaction and how does it compare to the original South Pas house?

Amazing.
